We create opportunities for families to work together to make Oakland a better place

In October 2007, Good Cents for Oakland launched its first City-wide Service Day for the Planet with the help of many business sponsors and community partners, including PG&E's Greening of Oakland Project, Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation, the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department, East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, Young Entrepreneurs at Haas (YEAH) and StopWaste.org.

Families worked together at Dimond Park in the Glenview District to clean the park, launch a community education garden and maintain the park's beautiful butterfly garden.  Children learned more about the 4Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot - as they took part in an environmental fact scavenger hunt and played games to earn prizes. They also worked with a local artist to create wonderful masks and other artwork with reusable materials. All attendees received giveaways, including a reusable water bottle and compact flourescent bulb courtesy of PG&E.

Upcoming family service opportunities

We will hold our next City-wide Service Day for the Planet at another Oakland park this fall. Check back for details in the coming months. We hope to launch our City-wide Service Day for Kids and Animals in the coming year.
